Solar Battery Maintainers Have Many Uses
Solar battery maintainers and trickle chargers look like a larger version of the photovoltaic cells used to power calculators–which is basically what they are. They convert the sun’s rays directly into electricity at low wattage (generally from 1.8 to 6 watts) which makes them convenient devices for countering the gradual loss of charge that is a feature of every battery, particularly ones–car batteries for example–that are designed to be recharged.
Most people use solar battery maintainers to ensure that they will be able to start the engine of a vehicle that is in disuse for a period of time. For instance, they may own a motor home that is kept in storage for most of the year. The battery would go flat if it weren’t kept topped up in one way or another. They are also useful for keeping the charge on the battery of a vehicle or device that is not usually run long enough for the alternator to recharge the battery–especially if the battery is on the old side.
Solar battery maintainers work well for any kind of lead-acid battery, whether it be an automotive starter battery or deep-cycle battery. Seeing as lead-acid batteries are put to use in a wide range of vehicles and crafts that may not necessarily always be adjacent to an electrical outlet, a device that can keep them charged up using only the sun’s shining rays also can be put to a wide range of uses.
RVs and boat batteries are obvious candidates for trickle charging as most owners only use them seasonally, and sparingly even then. They also pose the added challenge of how to keep the house batteries juiced. A solar battery charger, mounted on top of a motor home for example, can be the perfect solution.
But it’s not only the vehicles and crafts you use to explore the great outdoors whose batteries might need maintaining. How about that truck or motorcycle that you don’t use everyday, or your lawnmower?
Do you have a spot away from the house and electrical outlets where you like to go and just hang out with the dog? If you had a solar battery maintainer and a deep-cycle battery it would be simple to set up a system to power a laptop or some other electrical device. Some people purchase a solar battery maintainer to be used as a power source for their kid’s science project.
As you can see from the few examples given here, a solar battery maintainer is a very useful device that can be used for much more than just maintaining the charge on your car battery.

I purchased two of these and have them wired in Parallel for 210 amps. They are being charged with an 80 watt solar panel and a BatteryMinder Solar charge controller. I’ve had them for several months. They came almost fully charged, in good shape, well packaged and fast shipping.
I use this charger to charge a car battery, which I use with my UPS to keep my entertainment system up when power goes out (I live in Panama, where power goes out a lot). I also another one for my computer/router/Internet POE.
I use a simple, cheap UPS, remove the internal 12V battery, make my cable to connect to the now-empty terminals on the UPS, then connect to normal terminal lugs on the battery. I then clip the leads from this charger to the battery. When power goes out, the charger is not doing anything, so doesn’t get involved. The battery (60 Ahr when using this charger) provides enough juice for 1.5-2 hrs of TV. When power comes back on, the charger automatically charges the battery back up. For $30, I can’t beat it. I’ve been using this model for 3 years. I own 3 of them. Highly rated.

Excellent product. If you want to charge only one 12V storage battery at a time, even a van battery, this is in my opinion all you need. I looked at a number of sites, and couldn’t find a comparable value. I have even charged a flat battery, and the automatic feature worked flawlessly.
This is a must, for any battery that is stored for a few weeks or longer.
I used to charge my boat batteries every few weeks during the off-season, and only got 1 or 2 seasons out of them. Now I leave this charger on them all winter, and I already got 3 seasons out of the same type of batteries. Great product for the price.
This is a very simple, ‘hook-it-up and forget-about-it’ product. This is the second 2602 I’ve purchased in less than a year. The first I had to switch between two marine batteries every month or so, but both still remained fully charged. (Now I can keep one on each battery during the winter.) Our boat started right up this spring. I highly recommend this product for maintaining a charge.
